Or maybe I'm thinking of UPN, or possibly BET. Well, anyway, I never did find them compelling but I did find William Hung on the Internet. It does go to show me that Simon has no brains. One does not even need to see the show to have heard of that clown, Simon. William Hung may not be a superstar, but he can sing. Not to the standards of a professional singer, but when his weird little exercise was put to music, he was actually singing in key, which is more than a lot of people can do. As for his accent, Asia is full of people who sing in English with accents. I suppose that Julio Iglesias' accent is fine with us, but we won't take that from a Chinaman. Yes, I know Iglesias sings better, but if accents are inherently bad, Iglesias still has the same problem. Besides, it's easier to make fun of William Hung. It's easy to make fun of anybody who is surviving primarily on academic ability, because that's the easiest type to beat up in the schoolyard. There's also an issue of image. Asian males are simply not in style and never were. Asian women are hot, even though they were irrelevant just a few decades ago, but we have to keep those stereotypes alive. But it's about music, not image, right? Of course not. Music has nothing to do with it. If it did, you'd actually see the people playing the instruments. You'd care just as much about picking the bass player or guitarist as you would about the singer, and you might even care who wrote the songs. The idea is to do everything else ahead of time and just get somebody who looks the part and can sing too. Basically, it's a karaoke contest. You might get a big heavy black guy by mistake, but the public can take care of that. After all, it's all about talent. Wink, wink. So instead of letting the industry do its job of culling out what is not mainstream and filtering through to us only what appeals to the greatest common denominator, they can do it in public instead. You simply don't see leading Asian men in TV or in the movies, except for martial arts films, and even there they don't get to be romantic. I think it's ridiculous. Everything under the sun has been spoofed - the spy films, the cop dramas, teen horror films. Now it's Reality TV's turn. I say, "It's about frickin' time!"
