Movie Review: Thank You for Smoking
05.19.06 (4:20 pm)   [edit]
Now Showing in North American Cinemas
Rating: 4/5
Starring: Aaron Eckhart, Maria Bello, Robert Duvall, William H. Macy, Cameron Bright, Katy Holmes ... (more cool indie actors than I have time to type out).

Forget what you've heard about Tom Cruise possibly cutting out Katie's nude scene from this film. That shiat is UTTERLY IRRELEVANT. Utterly, I say. Now, that we have that out of the way, let's get on with it.

This is quite possibly the funniest film I have watched all year and not in a gross out frat boy (see Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn) kind of way. Even more auspicious for a comedy is that I came away from this film learning something quite important about myself. Inside me lives the heart of a chain smoker. Ok, ok, before you get all indignant on my ass about the perils of smoking, I ask you to bear with me a while.

After leaving the theater, I was tempted to light up, not because cigarettes are kewl. I wanted to light up because, by God, every human being has the right to decide for themselves if it's worth it, secondhand smoke withstanding. Granted, all the medical evidence is there to say it's not. Still, I don't believe it is the business of the federal or state government to reprimand me for ruining my own health, if I choose to do so. With that said, I must tell you that I am not a smoker and don't plan on being a smoker and not because cigarettes kiiiiiill, but because it's an expensive habit, medical bills not withstanding. That's right! I choose not to smoke because I can't afford it. Does that make me crass? Well, yeah. Of equal significance is the whole kissing thing. Can't tell you the last time that has happened to me (oh yeah, March). I like being kissed, often and hard ...okay...I'll stop there. You get the idea. Still, that's what Scope is for.

Anyway, the film could have been about guns or alcohol. Heh, well, it kinda was. It could have been about the McDonald's 99 cents menu. It could have been about plastic surgery, SUVs, chicken-fried steak, the Teletubbies or anything that through abuse could lead to negative health consequences.

Verdict: Worth a look!

Saw it at a preview a few months ago. Ironically, I was sitting next to a guy that smelled like he'd smoked 20 packs in the past 10 hours. My eyes were red from the smoke fumes during the movie...
