| Sitting in the Dark, Part I |
| 11.19.03 (10:16 pm) [edit] |
This is the first segment of a 10 part story. It is completely fictional.
It was late one night when Nat climbed the hill to her apartment complex with heavy shopping bags in each hand and a messenger bag slung over her right shoulder. She could feel her chest getting tighter with each step. The thought of dropping everything and reaching for her inhaler never crossed her mind. All she could think was "Go left. Go left. Go left, right, left." She walked in rhythm, trying to make the climb less painful. At the top of the hill, she felt breathless and lightheaded. Her vision was slightly blurred as she tried to cross the street to her apartment. She looked to her left and could see no cars coming. She looked to her right and saw complete darkness.
After some time had passed Nat found herself sitting in the dark. She had no idea where she was or how she got there. She was cold and wet and appeared to be sitting on some sort of bench. Her arms were bound as well as her feet with rusty wire. Suddenly struck with fear Nat began to cry. "Hello!! Is anybody there? Where am I? CAN SOMEBODY HEAR ME??? HELP!!! HELP!!!" She cried and screamed for some time and then her voice began to go. Her throat was dry and she could hardly hear herself say, "Am I going to die here?" She cried herself to sleep then moaned as she dreamed of demons and ghouls and other terrible things.
She woke up again with no clue of how much time had passed. There was a light over her. A single lightbulb hung from the ceiling. She could see that she was in some tiny room with a table in one corner and the bench on which she lay in another. At the other end was a wooden door. She could see light filtering through the key hole. She fell to her knees and scrambled to the door. Her wrists ached as she tried to pull herself up with the doorknob. She peered through the keyhole hoping to see something. Instead her eye was met with another eye. This was no ordinary eye. It was bloodshot and cold. Nat fell back onto the floor at the sight of it. Suddenly she heard a key put into the keyhole and she saw the doorknob turn. "Oh God! I don't want to die!"
To be continued...
