| Sitting in the Dark, Part IV |
| 11.21.03 (10:56 am) [edit] |
Rick woke up in the middle of the night suddenly with fresh sweat on his brow. The last time that had happened, his dear Nat had been in a car accident. At that time he had woken up, washed his face and then received a phone call that she had been taken to the emergency room at Brackenridge hospital. Now he had the same ominous feeling. He looked to his right and saw that Nat was not beside him and that her side of the bed had been undisturbed. It was now 4:00 AM. The last time he saw her it was 9:30PM and she had gone to the store to pick up a few items. He had offered to drive her over but she knew that he was tired and insisted that the walk would do her good. With a sense of urgency he pulled his pants on and stepped into the living room, then the kitchen. There was no sign that Nat had returned from the supermarket. He headed out to the parking lot in front of their apartment and hopped into their Volkswagon Jetta. As he left the parking lot he looked across the street and saw 3 shopping bags with groceries falling out of them on the sidewalk. His heart started pounding. He pulled up beside them and got out of the car. Then he noticed Nat's messenger bag and his heart stopped. He tried to remember the last thing she had said to him before she went out the door.
"When I get back, you'd better be naked!"
Rick froze on the sidewalk. Someone had taken her. Why? Who? Where? He began to shake. He reached for his cellphone and spoke into it. "Call Jon."
After 3 rings, Jon answered in a grumpy voice. "You'd better have a good f--king reason for calling me at this time of the morning!"
"Nat's missing."
"What? She left you again. Can't this wait till the morning?"
"No Jon. She's missing. Someone took her while she was coming from the supermarket."
"What? Are the police there?"
"No, I haven't called them yet."
"What are you waiting for?"
"Jon I have a bad feeling. I have a feeling that I'm never going to see her again."
"Sh-t!! Call the police, for f--k's sake! I'm on my way."
To be continued ...
